Mission
To found a Museum and Library honoring local African American heritage.
The Museum will be a historic monument to African American architecture and building craft. While slave labor built much of the nation, the slaves that constructed private homes and public buildings were, and often are still, unrecognized. The Historic Dallard-Newman House recognizes by name Ambrose and Reuben Dallard, the former slaves whose hands built this family home; this site honors their architecture, building skills, and craft.
Community Outreach & Public Engagement
The Museum, with rotating art and photographic exhibitions, will present the lives of the family and community members who were, and are still, part of the home's living history. Written and oral testimonials will be collected and shared here. The Museum will also be a cultural and community space for poetry readings, lectures and discussions. Visitors to The Historic Dallard-Newman House will participate in scheduled house- and Newtown-history tours. In this way the Museum will be an important educational resource for local, regional, and national audiences.
